Last year, Sail Baltimore was responsible for the on-the-water activity for Star-Spangled Sailabration, commemorating the 200th anniversary of the War of 1812 and the penning of “The Star-Spangled Banner.” This event was part of OpSail 2012. More than forty vessels – tall ships, naval vessels and others – were in port June 13-19 for this historic event!
We kicked off Star-Spangled Sailabration with our Tall Ship Night on Wednesday, June 13. Tall Ship Night was a dockside reception at Baltimore Marine Center at Inner Harbor on board Gazela, a 177’ barquentine from Philadelphia.
We have honored significant historic events over the years with similar large gatherings of ships: Sailabration 2004, OpSail 2000, OpSail 1992, Summer of Sail 1986 and Operation Sail 1976. Read more aboutthese eventsor find out which ships came to Baltimore for some of them.
Sail Baltimore hosts two annual fundraising galas, one in the summer – Tall Ship Night last year – and another in the fall – Tall Ships Toast in November 2012. The proceeds from these events, along with memberships, sponsorships and donations, support our activities and programs.
We are also a partner in several maritime events in Baltimore:Privateer Dayin Fells Point in April, theGreat Chesapeake Bay Schooner Racein Canton in October, and theBaltimore Parade of Lighted Boatsin December.
